A Timeless Fusion of Art Deco, Streamline Moderne, and International Style

Nestled in the heart of Denver’s Bonnie Brae neighborhood, this striking remodel masterfully preserves the essence of the original 1940s home while seamlessly integrating modern elements. The project, a meticulous pop-top remodel, respects the home’s architectural heritage while elevating its functionality and aesthetic.

The design maintains the home’s defining Art Deco influences, with bold geometric forms, clean lines, and a structured, modernist aesthetic. The newly added steel pergola roof overhang and herringbone-patterned tile introduce contemporary refinements while honoring the past. The transformation includes the conversion of the original flat roof into a spacious rooftop terrace, allowing for an expanded second-floor primary suite that integrates effortlessly with the existing structure.

Streamline Moderne Influence

Reflecting the sleek, aerodynamic look of the late 1930s and 1940s, the home’s curved corner, ribbon windows, and smooth stuccoed surfaces capture the essence of Streamline Moderne. The extended rooflines and cantilevered overhangs reinforce the era’s fascination with speed, efficiency, and modern industrial materials.

Asymmetry & Horizontal Emphasis

Breaking away from traditional symmetry, the home achieves balance through its dynamic interplay of rectangular and curved forms. Strong horizontal bands and elongated rooflines emphasize forward motion, a signature trait of both Streamline Moderne and International Style.

Spiral Staircase & Rooftop Access

At the rear of the house, a black metal spiral staircase provides access to the rooftop terrace, embodying both function and industrial artistry. The bold red accent panel adds a modern touch, serving as a striking contrast against the home’s monochromatic palette.

A Design Inspired by Motion and Innovation

This home is a testament to the era’s architectural influences, drawing inspiration from the streamlined forms of automobiles, ocean liners, and airplanes—symbols of progress and innovation. The renovation thoughtfully preserves the home’s historic charm while embracing modernist ideals, resulting in a space that is both timeless and highly sought after. By seamlessly blending the past with the present, this project exemplifies the beauty of architectural evolution, where history and modernity coexist in perfect harmony.
