Vail Mountain Haus

Futuristic Mountain Modern: A Mid-Century Inspired Retreat in Vail

This home began as a dream discovered by chance. During a ski trip in the 2016-2017 season, we stumbled upon this steep and challenging lot—one that, at first glance, seemed nearly impossible to develop. Originally part of a larger property, the land had been subdivided decades earlier, leaving behind complex zoning restrictions, parking variances, and difficult terrain. However, rather than seeing obstacles, we saw an opportunity to create something truly unique—a design that would embrace the mountain’s dramatic slope, merge modern innovation with nature, and provide an unforgettable living experience.

Overcoming Site Challenges

The site’s biggest challenge was access. With a steep grade and limited buildable space, achieving both parking and livable square footage required a creative solution. The key was a 30-foot foundation wall, allowing us to anchor the home into the hillside and create a cascading structure across five half-floor levels. The garage, placed within the allowable setback for non-living spaces, became the entry point, leading to a functional and flowing layout that harmonizes with the terrain.

A Seamless Flow of Spaces

From the garage, the home unfolds in a sequence of interconnected spaces, each designed to maximize the connection between indoor and outdoor living. The first level houses a mudroom, study, and bath, before stepping down into the heart of the home—a breathtaking Great Room with soaring ceilings and floor-to-ceiling glass, blurring the line between inside and out. A steel cantilever deck extends from this space, featuring bi-folding doors that seamlessly merge the living area with an expansive, multi-tiered outdoor retreat. The deck is designed with steel grating, allowing snow to fall through to the heated patio below for effortless winter maintenance.

An Outdoor Experience Like No Other

The outdoor living experience is just as meticulously designed as the interior. The three-tiered deck offers multiple zones for relaxation and entertainment, including a built-in outdoor kitchen, a fire pit, and a breakfast bar with a bi-fold window that connects directly to the kitchen.
Further down, a private guest suite and gym lead to the primary bedroom—an intimate sanctuary featuring a spa-inspired bathroom, steam shower, and a private heated patio with views of the forested
hillside.

Designed for Every Generation

The lowest level houses a kids’ bunk room, complete with a private bath and laundry area, while the stairwell itself becomes an art gallery, showcasing street photography from around the world by Scott Handler. The design emphasizes movement—both in its physical layout and the way it draws the eye through layers of texture, light, and space.

A Rooftop Retreat

One of the home’s defining features is the rooftop terrace, accessible via a stunning Mid-Century Modern spiral staircase. From here, panoramic views of the surrounding peaks and forests unfold, creating a true mountaintop retreat. A hot tub, ambient lighting, and integrated sound system transform this space into an elevated sanctuary, perfect for stargazing or unwinding after a day on the slopes.

Landscape Integration

The landscape design is just as integral to the home’s identity. Natural boulders have been masterfully placed to blend with the terrain, creating a seamless transition from the front driveway to the private backyard. Native plantings—aspens, ornamental grasses, and perennials—soften the rugged rockwork, offering a seasonal display of color and texture. During the snowmelt season, a natural stream meanders through the backyard, adding movement and sound to the experience. Carefully curated lighting highlights the organic contours of the landscape, bringing warmth and depth to the space at night.

A Fusion of Innovation and Aesthetics

This project is a testament to the balance of architecture and nature, where innovative engineering meets aesthetic elegance. Designed to be both futuristic and timeless, the home draws from Mid-Century Modern influences while embracing cutting-edge functionality. Warm wood tones, sculptural elements, and sleek finishes create an atmosphere that is both sophisticated and inviting. Expansive glass walls frame the changing seasons, reinforcing the home’s connection to its surroundings.

A Five-Star Luxury Retreat

Today, this property serves as an exclusive, five-star-rated Airbnb retreat, offering guests a rare combination of modern luxury and immersive natural beauty. More than just a home, it is a design experience—one that celebrates the challenges of its site and transforms them into a breathtaking, livable work of art.
